Fortunately, in Windows at least, the sampling rate frequency persists across connect/disconnect. Once the problem was root-caused, the fix turned out to be easy – I simply set the webcam mic to record at 16 KHz at all times, and the problem hasn’t happened since. In my case it started happening frequently, because the webcam was connected through a USB switch that I used on two computers – sometimes triggering multiple plug/unplug events in the same day. Subsequent re-initializations without hot-plugging make the issue go away. Somehow this bug happens whenever the mic is plugged in and initialized for the first time. That explains the effect – playing audio at thrice the recorded rate is what makes everything sound high-pitched and distorted. Turns out the Logitech webcam mic has a bug – it reports to the OS that it is capable of recording at 48 KHz, while it actually only does 16 KHz. Having figured out that the problem is in the realm of the Logitech webcam microphone, it was easy to find other people with similar issues, and a simple solution. Sure enough – when switching to a different input device (like the built-in laptop microphone) – the issue went away. Even if I did not use the camera, I used the built-in mic of the C160 as the speech device. Then it dawned on me – I had recently started using a Logitech Webcam C160 on this system – exactly the same one that’s been used on the old Win7 setup a few years back. Except now it was happening several times a day, and started getting annoying. The symptom was the same: “chipmunk voice” → reconnect → all good. A few online searches did not bring any info on this ussue, so I chalked it up to a bizarre inter-operability problem between Skype and that PC, and did not bother.Įventually the problem somehow went away, then at some point, it started happening on a different system (which was running Win10 and not Win7), and suddenly not only Skype got affected, but also Microsoft Teams. Hanging up and redialing always fixed the problem. I have read on some discord and skype forums that Huawei and samsung phones have this problem while some pure android phones and other brands does not. This is a dealbreaker for me and I am seriously considering returning the phone and switching to a brand which does not have this problem. I noticed this because I have terrible cellphone reception in my area and wanted to use discord over wifi as an alternative but as soon as the call opens the audio quality is reduced to a level which I am not able to understand what my father(reduced voice due to illness) is saying. you should now immediately notice a drastic and unbearable decrease in sound quality for the entire sound output of the phone.

I would like to be able to watch series while being on call with someone, for example. I hoped that by switching phone, my issue would go away. It is not a permanent fix however and it's complicated to do.
I read on internet that people had found a small fix, they forced the phone to be in call mode and everything worked well. When on call mode, the audio quality from other apps is perfect, but I cannot be heard : my mic stops working. On discord, you can change the communication mode (VOIP) to call mode. I can't listen to Spotify, nor watch Netflix or YouTube because the audio quality is just awful. It means that I can't multi-task while being on call. I switched from an HTC 11, with which I had the exact same issue I'm going to describe.īasically, when I start a call using discord, Skype or whatsapp, my audio quality becomes really bad. I've had my S10+ since some months already.
